At the scene

What to do after a crash

  1. Get safe. Call 911 if anyone is hurt. Move out of traffic if you can and turn on your hazard lights.
  2. Call the police. Ask for the officer’s name and the report number.
  3. Take photos and video. Both vehicles, damage, license plates, the scene, skid marks, traffic signals, and your injuries.
  4. Exchange information. Names, phone numbers, driver’s licenses, insurance companies and policy numbers, plates.
  5. Find witnesses. Get their names and phone numbers before they leave.
  6. Get medical care. Some injuries show up hours or days later. Keep every record and receipt.
  7. Be careful what you say. Don’t admit fault, and don’t give a recorded statement to the other driver’s insurer before getting advice.
  8. Report it to the DMV if required. California generally requires an SR-1 report within 10 days if anyone was injured or killed, or property damage is over $1,000.

Then call or text (310) ACCIDENT.
